Meet Ashro Woman of the Week, Rev. Dr. A’Kena, EdS from Emporia, KS Wife, college professor, minister, and style standout, A’Kena has a total of 5 closets (mostly filled with classic clothes)! “I love that I can wear items that are 30 years old….no one knows because the pieces are so classic.”
Meet Ashro Woman of the Week, Shanta from Lithonia, GA Shanta is a mother, grandmother and community powerhouse! As Founding Director of The Center for Truth and Healing, member of the Atlanta Black Chambers’ Global Opportunities Committee, and countless other associations, Shanta finds immense joy in making a positive impact.
Simone I. Smith, the wife of LL COOL J, and friend/business partner to Mary J. Blige, launches a new jewelry collection with ASHRO.
In 2004, Simone discovered a knot on her shin. Soon after she was sadly diagnosed with stage 3 chondrosarcoma, a rare bone cancer. Inspired by her own experiences, she created the lollipop pendant in 2009 to exemplify resilience.
Meet Ashro Woman of the Week, Felisha from Conyers, GA Doesn’t First Lady Felisha look gorgeous in brilliant blue!?! This stunning mother and grandmother is a woman of faith through and through. “My faith in Jesus affects everything in my life.” She serves the elderly and disabled daily through her work with affordable housing, supports her husband in pastoring their church (they recently celebrated their 10-year anniversary there), and nurtures her family with unconditional love—and kale greens.

Meet Ashro Woman of the Week, Catherine. from South Chicago Heights, IL Catherine is, no doubt, an expert at a lot of things. Here are just a few: 1. Making lemon pies. 2. Dressing up. 3. Inspiring others! As a mother, grandmother, retired teacher, and ordained minister, she’s had lots of practice encouraging others to be all that God made them to be. In fact, she has personally lived out this philosophy.
Meet Ashro Woman of the Week, Audrey S. from Cuba, AL Audrey is a mother, grandmother, retired math teacher AND retired United States Army Sergeant First Class—Thank you for your service, Audrey! Her best advice inspires us to great things while freeing us from perfection. “Do the best you can, whenever you can, with whatever God has blessed you with.” Yassss! No room for excuses…or for being anything less than what we are called to be!
Meet Ashro Woman of the Week, Renee S. from Huntsville, Alabama. What makes Renee happy? Besides putting God first, it’s seeing other people excited about their lives. Alright Ladies, isn’t that a rare and beautiful thing? With this kind of big-hearted outward focus, Renee is, no doubt, a bright spot in the lives of many. She loves being a mother and grandmother—so she can be there to listen to her kids and grandkids when they need her.
Meet Ashro Woman of the Week, Barbara from St. Louis, MO This remarkable woman has raised a family, started and successfully run her own company, performed the national anthem at Busch stadium, chaired blood drives, put on major fashion shows, acted as secretary for a 3,000+ Women’s Club—and much much more.

Meet Ashro Woman of the Week, Reverend Dr. Ellen from North Baldwin, NY This determined woman of faith is a retired nurse practitioner, a First Lady AND Assistant Pastor to her husband. Through her multiple ministries, Rev. Dr. Ellen works diligently to address the physical, mental, and spiritual needs of women and those in her local, national and world community. Her hard-won master’s degree and doctorate took 10 years of part-time schooling as she juggled the roles of full-time nurse, mother of two, and helpmate to her husband. During that challenging season, Ellen and her family also suffered a house fire that totally destroyed their home, leaving them homeless. Did this stop them? Absolutely not! As Rev. Dr. Ellen likes to say, “Walk in the destiny of which God has purposed for your life.” This is faith unwavering.
In support of the Black community, a great opportunity presented itself: to seek out and celebrate artistic expression. And we continue to offer this contest each year. The winning artists and their work are featured here. Congratulations to one and all!

Meet Ashro Woman of the Week, Danette from Jersey City, NJ This one-of-a-kind singer, actress and Ashro Woman is currently the ringmaster of Omnium Circus! Confident, stylish and bold in character, she lives her life from a place of faith. “Faith is the cornerstone of who I am. It allows me to stay upbeat and hopeful no matter what I face. Knowing that God is control, I KNOW everything is going to be alright.”
