What Does Onward & Upward Mean to You?

To me, it means onward means that it doesn’t mean that you’re gonna be walking a path with no obstacles in it. You may have to be doing some climbing and some crawling under.

— Angela Shelf Medearis, The Kitchen Diva!

I’m the Founder and President of Book Boosters, Inc., a 501 (c) 3 non-profit health education organization, a certified Diabetes Health Outreach Worker, and a Chef and television personality known as THE KITCHEN DIVA!

I’m also an award-winning author of 100 children’s books with 14-million copies of my books sold worldwide in 7-different languages. I’ve been honored at the White House for my work as a children’s author. I’ve also written 7-cookbooks based on American, African, Caribbean, and other ethnic cuisines including THE NEW AFRICAN-AMERICAN KITCHEN; THE KITCHEN DIVA COOKS!; THE ETHNIC VEGETARIAN and THE KITCHEN DIVA’S DIABETIC COOKBOOK. I write a weekly healthy lifestyle Hearst/King-Features column. It’s distributed to 1300 newspapers with 925,000 readers in the U.S. and Canada.

I’ve been a guest Chef on the TODAY show, FOOD NETWORK, DR. OZ and numerous local and national television shows to do healthy cooking demos and interviews about diabetes and my healthy, “Diva-Licious” recipes.

By way of background information, I wasn’t always a good cook, but I began to study diabetes and healthy cooking techniques that preserve non-white cultural recipes when my sweet husband and several family members were all diagnosed with Type II diabetes. I became passionate about the power of food to express love, to connect with all races of people, and to heal.

I taught myself how to create culturally-based, environmentally-friendly, “ethnic” vegetarian recipes–which means mostly vegetarian with small portions of meat, or meat on special occasions, flavorful and medicinal herbs and spices, alternative forms of proteins, and unique sweeteners. It’s a
“Diva-Licious” way to eat throughout the day!

The Kitchen Diva Health Outreach Charity

In 1988, Angela founded Book Boosters, Inc., a 501(c)(3) with her family. It started as a reading tutorial program for elementary age students, and has evolved into The Kitchen Diva Health Outreach, a program whereby she partners with community organizations to present nutrition information and speeches, workshops, cooking demos, healthy samples and nutritious lunches in an engaging way.

“I am passionate about impacting the health of my community, and over the years my husband, Michael, and I have worked to improve the outcomes for underserved children and families in Texas and beyond.”
